Bentonite clay and Montmorillonite Clay are used as interchangeable terms; however, the difference lies on the origin of where the clays are extracted from. Both are composed of ash made from volcanoes, the main difference is Bentonite clay was originally found in Wyoming; whereas Montmorillonite Clay was discovered in the French region of Montmorillon.
This clay possesses a strong negative charge which, when activated with water, gives it the power to pull toxins and heavy metals from the body. The science behind this phenomenon is that most of the toxins have a positive charge, therefore, when a strong negative charge is around it absorbs the positive charges and keeps them together.
This negative charge is due to its high mineral content: most prominently calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, iron, potassium and copper. It has other trace minerals which have been a concern of many people; one of them is lead. Lead is naturally occurring in elements extracted from the earth, such as clays. The important aspect to consider when dealing with this metal is what type you are exposed to. In the case of bentonite clay, due to its strong negative charge, lead is not bioavailable in the body meaning that it doesn’t separate from the clay, thus, leaving the body after the application with the toxins it bound to.
This clay brings different benefits when used in certain areas of the body. That’s why, we recommend using the following products for specific purposes:
