Even my own pediatrician has offered a myriad solutions. What it really boils down to is a consistent effort by both parent and child to prevent dehydration an d maintain skin moisture. Hydration must happen on the inside and on the outside as well. Children must drink water, and they must moisturize skin.
If you live in an area where winter weather means indoor heating, you will really need to moisturize the air to counteract the drying effect from your home’s heating system. Also remember to use an air filter to capture as many particles of dust and other irritants that can be blown around from heating ducts. These are some simple and natural preventative steps to maintaining our children’s healthy skin moisturization. However, it does not end there…we must do more.
Why is Skin So Important?
Skin is the largest organ of the body and all the skin on our bodies is not created equal. Likewise, our internal body condition can result in specific issues, such as excema, cradle cap or diaper rash. Whenever these appear, remember this formula: Treat the problem internally, and externally together. It is a two part process. Internally means hydrate and eat healthy nutritious foods that have vitamins and antioxidants (all year round). Externally means to apply moisturizing products.
Since store brand cleansers create the problem of overdrying, adding toxins to the surface of the skin, and potentially providing health risks, we recommend switching to handmade soaps. MM has a line of handmade natural soaps to choose from. To moisturize, try a thin coating or Euro Oil on the entire body after showering or bathing. When towel-drying, just pat the skin and do not rub it. Otherwise, if you can, air dry before applying the Euro Oil. Do not put on clothing until the oil has fully absorbed, leaving the skin feeling soft but not greasy. This will take about 5 minutes.
