“Lather, rinse, repeat” – The directions found on most shampoo bottles. But when using our products, you may ask yourself: where is the lather? where is the foam?
When you use our shampoos for the first time, you will instantly notice that there will be no lather or foaming, which may come as an initial surprise. As consumers, we are accustomed to that foaming sensation while washing our hair and can enjoy the effects. Because of this, when first using Morrocco Method shampoos, the lack of foam may have you question the quality and even the effectiveness of our product. But in reality, the addition of sulfates and other foam-creating chemicals is a completely superficial ideal and actually has negative effects on the health of your hair and scalp.
What are Sulfates?
Sulfates, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), are used in virtually all products that foam, lather and/or creates suds. SLS-type ingredients create the lathering effect that many shampoos have. It is also a relatively inexpensive ingredient that is powerful at combating oiliness. So powerful, in fact, that it is even used in many anti-greasing agents such as professional floor cleaning products.
Isn’t less oily hair a positive attribute?
Yes and no. While sulfates do aide in removing oils, this is actually counter-productive for your hairs healthiness. Because the chemicals are so strong, they strip hair strands of natural oils which ultimately results in weaker, dryer, and more brittle hair. If you have natural hair that is considerably oily, sulfate may appear to you as an attractive ingredient, but there are all-natural alternative solutions especially in our Morrocco Method formulas. For example, White Willow Bark (Salix alba) is one of the most prominent ingredients in many of our products and one of it’s benefits is controlling oil production. Having oily hair is not a negative attribute. Rather, it’s a stigmatization of American culture that has sold oil-free hair as an attractive trait, when in reality HEALTHY hair is the most attractive.
Why irritation shouldn’t be ignored
Have you ever accidentally gotten shampoo in your eyes? Of course, everyone experiences this and the results are usually painful causing irritation and redness. This is not something that should be considered a norm, however. The product that we are using to “clean” ourselves should not hurt on impact! This is a direct result of sulfate and other foam creating chemicals. Eye irritation is just one of the harmful effects of the chemicals as well. Sulfates and other chemicals also irritate the scalp and skin overall which results in diminished hair growth along with a dry and itchy scalp. Thankfully this is reversible. We offer a recovery to scalp damage with our Hair and Scalp Recovery Package. In addition there are many other benefits of switching to sulfate-free hair products.
Are all “sulfate-free” labels honest?
The simple answer is no. There are many shampoos out there that are labeled as sulfate free. However, this is simply due to the constant name changing ingredient SLS. Companies are changing the name of their chemicals over and over again to confuse the consumer. This way, they can say that they are “sulfate-free” because they are – but instead they have their new chemical that is disguised in the ingredient list. In addition, you may have recently tried a sulfate-free shampoo and noticed that it still lathers, this is an indication that there are still SLS ingredients or other unnatural foaming additives.
Ingredient Names to Look-Out For!
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
- Sodium Lauroyl Isoethionate
- Sodium Lauroyl Taurate
- Sodium Cocoyl Isoethionate
- Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isoethionate
- Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate
- Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate
Many companies use these ingredients, as they are just a few atoms away from the chemical structure of sulfate, but this allows them to promote as “sulfate-free shampoo” even though they are just as dangerous as sulfate. If it foams, don’t take it home! This is what makes our Morrocco Method products unique from other shampoos that use the claim of “sulfate-free.”
